The new European Accessibility Act will require all companies to adapt their websites and applications

In 2025, digital accessibility will become a legal requirement for much of the private sector.

The European Accessibility Act (EAA) will mark a turning point for any company offering digital products or services in the European Union. Starting June 28, 2025, compliance with a series of accessibility requirements will be mandatory, affecting sectors such as e-commerce, banking, telecommunications, transport, and digital media.

At Lemondit, we develop custom software and can help ensure that your website, app, systems, or digital products comply with the regulations. More importantly, we ensure this happens seamlessly—integrating into your workflow without compromising design or user experience.

Who is affected by the law?

The EAA requirements apply to a wide range of products and services:

  • E-commerce websites and apps
  • Digital banking and fintech systems
  • Mobile apps for transport and e-tickets
  • Interfaces for payment or self-service terminals
  • E-readers, ATMs, embedded software

If your company offers any of these products or services in Europe, you will be required to demonstrate accessibility in compliance with the harmonized standard EN 301 549 (based on WCAG 2.1 AA).

What compliance involves

Compliance is not just about “making a website accessible.” It means addressing accessibility holistically:

  • Information, contracts, and support in understandable and perceivable formats
  • Interfaces compatible with screen readers, keyboard navigation, and assistive technologies
  • Forms, payments, and processes accessible from the start
  • Accessibility maintained over time, not just at launch

What if I don’t comply?

Spain has already approved its sanctioning framework. Fines can reach:

  • €30,000 for minor violations
  • €90,000 for serious violations, plus potential suspensions or disqualifications

But beyond the legal risk, non-compliance means closing the door to millions of users and markets that are increasingly demanding in this area.
